Last update of the year

Now the end of the year is nearing, it's time for the last updates of 2018 and my traditional looking back on the year.

To go back in time a little further than that: in August 2011 I began adding Dutch translations to the pages about cities, towns and municipalities, with the first ten pages published in September and at that time still about 140 more to go. I never expected it would take me seven years to complete this undertaking, but today I believe the job is done, with four pages about municipalities in Noord-Brabant. Goirle, Haaren, Oirschot and Oisterwijk are now bilingual and improved, with objects added on all pages except for Oirschot. The Haaren page replaces the old Helvoirt page. For this page I had to resort to using ancient pictures made with the old Mavica camera (all made in 2001), but some day these will be replaced.

Although back in 2011 I announced the architect's pages would be translated next, I hesitate to do so, as there are so many of them. Since most of the history and styles pages could use a big overhaul I'm considering translating those in the process.

The statistics for 2018. This year I took 4602 pictures of 224 churches, 163 of which I visited for the first time, in 85 cities, towns and villages. Especially many in Gelderland and Noord-Holland, but also in Utrecht, Zuid-Holland, Overijssel and Friesland. The latter is a province I hadn't been to since 2008. Many of these churches are now on this website, but many others are still not. My backlog is not getting any smaller.

There were 23 messages on this weblog, not counting this one, to announce the updates. There were only 16 new pages; 6 locations, 9 churches, 1 architect. And of course, four older pages were translated, while ten pages about cities, towns and municipalities were expanded, including a few big updates. There were many changes to the architects pages, especially in the form of new pictures. And many smaller changes I can't remember.

There were over 20,000 pageviews by 11,000 visitors from 126 different countries, most of whom use a PC. Many of these visit once or twice, but there also seem to be hundreds of regular visitors, for which I'm especially grateful.

Enough for the statistics, please come back in 2019!

In totaal nu 199 pagina's.

Friesland again

It's back to the province of Friesland with a page about its southernmost municipality Weststellingwerf. Actually its contents are restricted to its major village Wolvega but as I hope to visit that part of the country again next year I chose to already use the name of the municipality.

That page comes with seperate pages about the two biggest churches in Wolvega, the reformed church and the catholic St. Franciscus

Big Apeldoorn update

The page about the city of Apeldoorn, Gelderland has had a major update; the old version had many pictures taken in winter, with dark skies and plenty of snow. Most of these have been replaced by new pictures taken last Summer, with blue skies and plenty of sunshine. In all, seven pictures  were replaced. Also three objects were added, making this page practically complete.

A second page was added to cover the churches in the villages of the Apeldoorn municipality, at this moment a total of eight churches in six villages. Not complete by far, but a very nice start anyway.

Architects updates

It's about time that I should sum up all the architect's pages that were updated in the last two months with some of the many pictures I took during my most recent trips.
Here's a nice list:

Three architect's pages are updated: the page about A. Nauta has two new pictures, the one about H.C.M. van Beers one. The page about J.Th.J. Cuypers has one new picture but also improved text, with some more information about Cuypers' son P.J.J.M. Cuypers or Pierre Cuypers jr.., including the churches the latter designed without his father.

Utrecht updates

A few updates in the Utrecht province section. First, a couple of better pictures on the page about De Bilt municipality of two churches in the village of that same name. Second, some important changes to page two of the Utrecht municipality, the one with the churches outside the old center. Four pictures replaced, two objects added and thus now more complete than ever. And third, new pictures and better text on the page about the St. Aloysius church, as seen in the picture above.

Another Friesland update

The second update this year in the Friesland section concerns the Leeuwarden page; more than before it's now about the municipality rather than just the city. Much improved and more up to date text. Also several pages about village churches are now connected to the Leeuwarden page, and some of these pages have better text as well.

A Friesland update

The first update (not counting translations) in the Friesland (or Fryslân) section since 2011, with the promise of a bit more to come. As the Súdwest Fryslân municipality was expanded recently this gave me the opportunity to add a few objects not included before. I also updated the text of this page, as well as some of the pages about specific churches in this municipality.

Gelderland, a 'newish' page

A new page about the Renkum municipality has been added, containing all the objects that used to be on the old Oosterbeek page, but now with updated text, as well as churces in the villages Renkum and Heelsum. Not complete but nice anyway.

Gelderland, a new page

The first new page about the year is about the St. Donatus in Bemmel, a catholic post-war church by architect J.H. Sluijmer. This church was recently converted into a theater, but all pictures on this page were made back in 2006 (which illustrates how big my backlog is) when there was still no talk of closing the church, let alone about its future destination. The pictures are accompanied by a fairly comprehensive history.

First update of the year

A very belated happy new year to all of you, with the first month of 2018 almost over. The first update of the year is a small one, with a few new pictures on the page about the Reformed church in Ressen, Gelderland.

Because I didn't in December, I'd like to take this opportunity to look back at 2017. There were 27 updates with at least one each month. There were a few new pages about towns and municipalities in Noord-Brabant and Zuid-Holland as well as seven seperate churches. Six new architects' pages were added. There were many small and big changes, including a few significant improvements to pages about towns and municipalities especially in the provinces Zuid-Holland and Gelderland. 11 pages were translated to Dutch. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things, but I think these are the highlights of last year.

We'll see what 2018 will bring. I hope you'll enjoy it.
