The last updates of 2019

The last updates of 2019 take us back to the province of Limburg, more specifically the most beautiful city of the Netherlands, Maastricht. First, the page was split in two, with a second page now covering the churches in areas added to the city since 1920. The first page is now about the city center only, and seven objects were added to it while four older pictures were replaced. There's also an improved version of the page about St. Lambertus church (see picture), with better text and many new pictures. That is actually the third version of this page which in its first form originated from 2001 and was radically updated in 2005.

And so another year is coming to an end and as usual I like to conclude with some statistics. About the first I'm not so sure: was it Archimon's twentieth year, or its twenty-first?  Anyway, it was a good year, with updates just about  every two weeks. A total of twenty-eight new pages were added, nine about municipalities and nineteen about specific churches. No architects this year, and neither were there any older pages translated, but many pages were reviewed and given their share of new pictures and usually improved text.

On my trips this year I visited sixty-five towns and villages in six provinces and took 3480 pictures of 142 churches and chapels, of which 83 were new to me and many of which I have yet to add to this website, which had over 18000 pageviews by some 9500 visitors coming from 117 countries.

New updates are already being worked on but will not be published until 2020. I hope you will all join me again then.

Two more new pages in the Zeeland section, about the reformed churches of Grijpskerke and Serooskerke

A few more Utrecht updates

New in the Utrecht section is a small but complete (ignoring several modern monstrosities) page with the churches in Montfoort municipality, plus seperate pages about the two main churches of Montfoort town, the gothic reformed St. Janskerk and the catholic St. Johannes de Doper, the latter one of W. te Riele's designs.

Zuid-Holland update

There are several improvements to the page about Gouda today, with four pictures replaced and three objects outside the old center added, such as the one in the picture above.

Some more Utrecht updates

The page about Woerden municipality has a few more objects added to it as well as a few pictures replaced. There are also a few new pictures, and of course better text, at the pages about the two main churches of Woerden town, the reformed Petruskerk and the Roman Catholic Bonaventura

The picture above of the latter church has a bit of an odd shape and that's because it's composed in Photoshop by combining several pictures. I've been doing that for years and it's something I keep in mind while taking pictures, and it's only the second time (see here for the first) I haven't managed to fill in the blank spaces and yet decided to use the picture anyway. You may find similarly odd shaped, and even odder, pictures in the near future.

Noord-Holland, two new pages

New in the Noord-Holland section are pages about two catholic churches in the Koggenland municipality. First, the St. Bavo in Ursem, designed by architect A.J. Kropholler, and second the St. Georgius in Spierdijk, which is made up of two very different parts designed by W.D. van der Horst and A.C. Bleijs respectively.

Some more of Limburg

Several changes and additions to the Limburg section today. First, the page about Beekdaelen municipality is a bit more complete, with one more church added.
Entirely new is a page about Voerendaal municipality. With only three churches it is a very modest beginning, but it does form a link between three pages about specific churches. Of these, the one about the St. Laurentius in Voerendaal village is largely unchanged, but the page about the St. Remigius in Klimmen has many new pictures as well as a more elaborate description. The third church, the St. Theresia in Ransdaal, is the subject of a completely new page.

Some small updates were made to the pages about the Gulpen-Wittem and Eijsden-Margraten municipalities, with two new objects each. A bigger update concerns the page about the St. Margarita in Margraten which has several new pictures as well as revised text.

The page  about St. Nicolaas en Barbara church in Valkenburg town has had all of its pictures replaced by much better ones while the pages about St. Jozef church (see picture) in Broekhem and St. Gerlachus in Houthem each have their share as well.

And another one

Here's a new page about a charming little church in the south of Limburg, the old St. Jan in Hoensbroek. Incidentally, that's the first new page about a specific church in Limburg in almost seven years. More such pages are coming soon.

Zuid-Holland and Utrecht changes

Merging municipalities are not unusual anymore, there are a few every January, and they're always a pain. I know I haven't made the appropriate changes to all pages involved for last year, let alone this year. This January came with a rare, and hopefully never to be repeated case. Not only did three municipalities become one, two of those were also transferred to another province. The new Vijfheerenlanden municipality page replaces the former Vianen (Utrecht section) and Leerdam (Zuid-Holland section) pages. The good news is that it also comes with four new churches in villages in the former Zederik municipality (a page I never finished), such as the one in the picture. Having to also transfer the pages about the reformed churches of Leerbroek and Leerdam to the Utrecht section is a thing I did not enjoy at all. There may be some loose ends.

If only politicians were more aware of the consequences of their decisions....

Gelderland, new pages

It's back to Gelderland again, with two new pages. First, a page about Voorst municipality and second, a page about one of its churches, the reformed church in Wilp, as seen in the picture above.

Another Noord-Holland update

Here is one more Noord-Holland update; the page about the Gereformeerde kerk in Andijk, E. Reitsma's Expressionist masterpiece, has many new pictures and more and better text.

More Noord-Holland

The page about Stede Broec municipality has had all (four) of its pictures replaced by better ones. Also, both the pages about the catholic churches in this municipality, respectively the St. Johannes in Grootebroek and the H. Nicolaas in Lutjebroek, now have improved text and, especially in the case of the latter, some better pictures.

A new year, a new page

A happy new year to all readers. The first update of 2019 is a new page about Medemblik municipality in Noord-Holland. Far from complete, but still already quite big with 20 churches. Incidentally, this is also the 200th page to have both English and Dutch text.
